A 7/8 polymeter can be one of the simplest to understand and apply to your compositions. Shortening a measure of 4/4 by one eighth note creates an odd time riff that will continually shift from an downbeat to an upbeat feel against the simple timing of 4/4. You’ll also notice some of the rhythmic displacement that happens as the riff slides backwards in time from beat to beat.
