Due to the overwhelming requests for some Tonal guidance I have uploaded some patches for the Line6 Pod HD. These patches will cover the fundamentals of achieving and more importantly re-creating Jones’ sound for performance. I even setup up some controllers for the FBV Shortboard pedal. One thing that has been apart of my live setup throughout my time as a player has been an **Ibanez Volume pedal**. ItĀ alleviatedĀ the unavoidable and obnoxious “CLICK!, I’ve just changed channels on my amp” sound that we all deal with. It also allows you to achieve a great “semi-dirty” tone necessary for so many Tool songs. Essentially it act as if you were turning down you Volume knob on your guitar, creating a softer yet still kind of dirty tone. You can’t play Tool with having some sort of control over your Dynamics (how loud and soft you can sound). So in the end I’ve worked that into the Shortboard’s controls. The expression pedal control the Amp’s Drive and Ch. Volume. Now I can roll back the pedal and reduce my gain and boost my volume to compensate.
The reason I use two different patches is because Jones’ tone on that album is a little more subdued. He doesn’t have that modern high gain sound. The layering of amps isn’t the same as the later albums. You could get away with using the Undertow patch for tracks off the Anemia album but I find the TenDays patch up to the task of covering three albums of production evolution.
Again these are just basic setups. Certain songs with need added effects. You’ll probably want to experiment for tweaking these patches to fit the needs of your specific setup.
