Welcome to my most abstract lesson ever! Irregular Meter is a difficult concept to apply effectively so in this lesson we’re trying to make it somewhat functional and applicable. Our Irregular Meter is 7/3 (that’s 7 eighth note triplets) and it will take 7 beats to finally fall back on the downbeat of “one”. Because of this we will set ourselves in a 7/4 time signature and within that playing a 7/3 motif or phrase. Instead of writing an awkward, odd time riff we’re using dissonance as a sound or texture to help blur and amplify the sense of time.
